Carly goes missing in 1973 on a day when she was to rendezvous with her seventeen year old boyfriend, Miles. Twenty-four years later her sister, Julia, contacts Miles in order to bring some understanding to her sister's disappearance. David Long's writing is skilled but the story (and its ending) are pretty implausible. I found Julia's monologue-like emails to be too meandering and unrealistic. This is a hard book to categorize. It sounds like a mystery but it becomes more of a character study. [...]

This urban, nocturnal story links two characters—the quiet, withdrawn Miles Fanning and the expressive, obsessed Julia Lamoreaux—through their quest for the past. Long creates a strong dynamic through the correspondence between these two characters—Julia and Fanning's telephone conversations and emails. I learned a lot about narrative voice, sentence structure, and character development reading this book.

This book is one of those books whose characters are simply real people. Not too much action and heavy with dialogue. The character of Julia was really intriguing and carried the book. Sexual tension also evident as Miles and Julia connected through e-mail and telephone conversations about his girlfriend that went missing long ago and how Julia's family especially her father were left in the wake.

In 1973 Carly Lamoreaux disappears while on her way to meet her boyfriend. This book explores the consequences of Carly's disappearance - for her parents, her sister and her boyfriend. It is well-written with interesting characters. The story surrounding Carly's disappearance slowly unwinds throughout the book, keeping the reader in suspence. I really enjoyed this book and will look for more of David Long's books.

A very different kind of story but also very interesting. It is a good study of two characters that share a tragedy in their past.
