      I don't know, how is one to rate a book like it's a hotel? This reader enjoyed this writer's work very much. The basic thread, if that's the correct term, is the securing of endowment funds for two chairs at a university for African Americans. All else is wonderful amplification through satirical asides, parentheses and digressions that take the reader into the deep guts of the academic beast.       I found the book dull. It read more to me like a screed from the author, a way to spew out pent up venom against strong women.
