Custard Crime by Jessica Beck is book 14 in the Donut Mysteries series. Chief Martin's exwife is found killed and Suzanne's boyfriend, State Police Inspector Jake takes over the investigation. Chied Martin is now married to Suzanne's mother and Suzanne decides to assist. This book seemed a little slow. Suzanne's manner and inflated opinion of her investigating skills was irritating. I found it difficult to stay interested.

dropped 2 stars because suzanne hart was especially obnoxious in this one with how she handled:a) emma: she seemed like such a bitch to emma at several points regarding the workings of the doughnut shop. we get it, you have a way to do things, but you were gone a month and let two other people take over. ugh. and don't get me started on letting emma make her own weird doughnut. "did you really like it?" she had to lower her voice and was shocked when someone did. she didn't really care for it so [...]

Jessica Beck seemed to have finally, albeit belatedly, tracked down his muse and reconciliation looks to be on the cards. Most things that were irritants in my opinion were minimized or transcended. Gone are the tedious exchanges between Suzanne and her mother. Almost gone is the ingratiating rhetoric that passes for direct speech in this series. Most of the events made sense. The author managed to find place for the heroine's boyfriend and best friend without losing his style and pacing. Not on [...]

Custard Crime is book fourteen in the Donut shop mysteries. The Chief of polices ex wife is murdered in the shop she was looking to open as a candle shop with her business partner. Jake Bishop a State Police Inspector and also Suzanne Hart's Boyfriend is called in to investigate the crime. Suzanne and Grace decide to help him since they know everyone in town. But it seems Suzanne gets to close to the killer and is trapped in a burning house! Does she make it out alive? Do they catch the killer? [...]

2014-08-02. Another 4.5 for me. I really enjoyed all the family relationship stuff that hit this one as the main suspect (from the outsiders perspective) would be the chief of police--Suzanne's new father-in-law. One nice side effect is that this means that Jake gets to stay in town to solve the mystery. I did find it a. It odd and too convenient that Jake ended up working so closely with her as it seemed out of character. Fun read.

This is the 14th edition of the series and I really liked it. This time, the Chief's ex-wife is murdered and Suzanne and Grace are trying to solve the case with the help of Suzanne's boyfriend, state police inspector Jake Bishop. The story is full of suspects and it's a good read to see how they eliminate them and come to the resolution of the murder. Another great installment in the series!

This book was okay. Although I enjoy the characters and like to see what happens to them each book, the plot is mostly the same every time: someone is murdered, and Suzanne and Grace investigate with/without permission from the chief. I would enjoy a bit of a shake up next time.

Reading up on the series, I learned that earlier releases tend to be better crafted. Not bad, but very quick read. Some romantic elements. Not so sure I care for the main character. Some romance/romantic elements.

    10. Valerie

This was a good one but maybe I'm getting tired of this series. The last couple of books really have no excitement to them. A murder happens then Suzanne and Grace ask questions until they stumble unto the killer or the killer finds her first. Bring back some drama.
