Ok I really wasn't expecting these feelings. I signed up to review this for a blog tour. Loaded it up on my kindle & headed out for the day to read. What happened was I basically ignored everything & everyone around me to read this brilliant story. Detective Luke is called upon to solve a mysterious serial killer. When a profiler is called in Luke is convinced she will be no help. Of course he's proven wrong. However with a whopper of a twist that seriously had me gasping the whole story [...]

I have read and reviewed The Soldier’s Secret by Heather Osborn, which is a totally different genre from her latest work, The Fairest of Them. I was very surprised that an author who normally writes historical novels and does them well, can suddenly turn to mystery-crime. It turns out that Ms. Osborne has a background in criminology and psychology, and uses it well to pull her genre switch! The Fairest of Them was birthed in the short story Crushed Gardenias. At first, I was confused by the fa [...]

I enjoyed reading this book, and thought the mystery was intriguing. The chemistry between Luke and Melinda was good, but for me their relationship seemed too rushed – within a few days of meeting they were already planning a wedding. I wanted a slower pace and I really wanted their relationship to smolder longer rather than spontaneously combust. I also groaned when Melinda left Luke sleeping so that she could go pack. That was just one of those decisions that seemed incompatible with her bas [...]

I enjoyed the character of Rae Hatting in ‘Crushed Gardenias’ and was pleased when the author created a series. The plot is intricate and well thought out with a murderer obsessed with Fairy Tales who crafts the crimes to fit the stories. I liked Luke Thompson. A few times I wanted to give him a whack around the back of the head though because he totally wears his heart on his sleeve. Rae’s great. I couldn’t be friends with her because she’s far too scary but as a government agent, she [...]

It's rare to find a book where you find things you like abut all the main protagonists. Luke, Melinda and Rae all have qualities and personality traits that I liked. I was also pleased to find that they weren't your typical gun wielding detectives - they had feelings and flaws which made their personalities more real and believable. The reason behind the murders that are being investigated is really imaginative and original. Once I found the reason out, then the choice of book cover made sense an [...]

This is a book for thriller readers. Very much along the formula path, the author tells a good story which is the first thing I look for in a book and kept me intrigued and interested throughout. I was a bit distracted by the romance element which didn’t work for me but that aside, this is one that you will enjoy and that I can recommend with ease. Enjoyed the characters and the structure very much, a solid three stars from me.

The Fairest of Them by Heather Osborne is the first book in the Rae Hatting Mysteries. Detective Luke has been trying to solve a case involving the Fairy Tale serial killer. After an awful turn of events, Rae Hatting joins the case. This story had a couple of things that didn't make sense to me. The romance was way too quick and the decision to leave and pack by a secondary character just didn't fit with her being a cautious person. All in all it was an okay read.

Luke Thompson is a police detective who solved a string of serial killer cases, and then sought a more peaceful life as a detective with the police in Mendocino County, California.Unfortunately, after a deceptive lull, he finds himself hunting a serial killer again, someone who dresses his victims as figures from fairy tales. He also finds love, in the person of an FBI profiler Then tragedy strikes too close to home.Luke is thrown into a tailspin, but the serial killer is still at work.Rae Hatti [...]

Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' FavoriteThe Fairest of Them: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 2 is a romantic suspense novel written by Heather Osborne. For the last three years, someone’s been killing women in Mendocino County, California, and then dressing them up as fairytale characters. The latest victim was found in MacKerricher Park with a first edition copy of Goldilocks and the Three Bears peeking out of a pocket of the starched white pinafore the killer had dressed her in. The police [...]

The Fairest of Them is book two in Rae Hatting's Mystery Series. I did not have a chance to read the first book, but from reading the description on this website, I can assure you that the author, Ms. Osborne, did an excellent job keeping the series flowing. (Writing a series is an art unto itself.)The Fairest of Them takes us to Mendocino, California where a series of horrific murders have taken place. Detective Luke Thompson, having found fame from having hunted down another serial killer, see [...]

This is the second book in the Rae Hatting mysteries. It’s broken into several parts. Part one takes place in 2005 with Lucas Thompson who is investigating a possible serial killer. All the bodies are left staged as a character from a fairy tale. We follow his frustrations as the clues that he needs to capture the killer, or killers eludes him. Melinda Rawlings is an FBI profiler, who uncovers some new evidence. But as she gets closer to discovering who the killer is, she incurs his/her wrath. [...]

Review of The Fairest of Them by Heather OsborneI read this story for The Curmudgeon Book Review and give it five stars. Love the author’s description of places and people. The words are so vivid and flow so well that this read found reading this book a pleasure. The story is intriguing right from page one as in her short story, “Crushed Gardenias.” Fans will not be disappointed. The main character is a handsome, rough-around-the-edges police detective who has been working a serial killer [...]

The Fairest of Them is a very enjoyable read. The author has created a unique and engaging premise for this follow-up to Crushed Gardenias--a serial killer who poses victims to enact fairy tales. I even learned about a couple of fairy tales I wasn't familiar with. I had to keep guessing what kind of person could be responsible for this crime. The author struck a good balance with a villain who was believable but not obvious.I would have liked more of a build-up to the romance between Detective L [...]

have always appreciated a good thriller, and a good romance as well. It has only been in recent years that I have come to appreciate the combination of the two. This book brings plenty of punch with a serial killer with a grotesque way of playing out fairy tales. The local police and FBI have been trying to unravel this for years without making much progress. After the initial "Hansel and Gretel" they have not even been able to identify the victims. With the latest addition to the horrific anthol [...]

Do you like mysteries with a touch of romance? I do! I was excited to read this book when I read the blurb for it. I mean, you have FBI and local sheriff's department trying to solve a string of unsolved, vicious homicides where the characters are dressed up as fairy tale characters. FBI agent Rae Hatting is asked to join an investigation about a serial killer in CA who is dressing up the victims in fairy tale outfits. The killings have been unsolved for over 6 years now. The problem? The last w [...]

A well deserved five starsI received this free, in exchange for an honest review, and I'm glad I took the time to read it. I read the short into to the series, Crushed Gardenias, a while back, and absolutely loved it.The Fairest of Them reintroduces the main character from Crushed, FBI agent Rae Hatting. She has to team up with broken detective, Luke Thompson, to solve a series of murders, where the victims are laid out like fairy tale characters. The characters in this book are wonderfully broug [...]

Engaging read. Great plot twists. First of all, I'll say that I don't think the cover of The Fairest of Them does this book justice. It is a really interesting crime/suspense novel with a serial killer that presents his victims in a sadistic, fairy tale fashion. So, after knowing this, the cover fits, but it just wasn't visually appealing to me. So, don't look over this book because of the cover if, like me, you're not finding it appealing in some way.Not a big deal, but I do wish this book had [...]

I absolutely loved this novel and had been eagerly awaiting it since the short story crushed gardenia's was released last year. The characters are so well written that I could imagine myself being friends with some of them! I was particularly intrigued by the dynamics between the players in the game so to speak and loved the twist in the tale at the end.I couldn't put this novel down and have read it all in one day, I was hooked from the first chapter, right to the end.I cant wait to read the nex [...]

This is an entertaining thriller, with a touch of romance. The good guys are out to capture a serial killer who has a fascination with fairy tales--only these stories don't end well. The author delves into the characters' feelings for each other enough to understand its connection to the story, without getting all sappy (for which I am grateful).I was puzzled at first because I was expecting it to be about Rae, but then it all became clear. (If I say more, I'll give the plot away, so I'll refrai [...]

This was a very interesting story that sucked me in from page one. I really loved the characters and how they connected with one another. The case Luke worked was intriguing and kept me hooked wanting to know what would happen next. I really enjoyed this story but I felt there were somethings that just stopped and left questions unanswered. How ever I am curious what will be in the next book.

This book is a great read. Murder, mystery and fairytale characters so you can't go wrong. I really enjoyed hot Heather Osborne writes this book and all of the details she puts into her characters. I can't wait to read more books in this series and more from the author.

This story was truly a treat. Not knowing what to expect, I loved the way the author started the story and then, bringing in the main character a bit later. Rae is indeed pretty amazing. Although I hadn't read the prequel to this story, it was not a problem. I didn't feel like I was lost at all, so this is definitely a stand alone. The Fairest Of Them is about a serial killer and a police officer, Luke, who'd been trying to solve the cases for several years. I loved getting to know Luke and all t [...]

    25. C.B. Pratt

A well-written and well-plotted serial killer mystery that focuses, refreshingly, on the law enforcement personnel who must solve the crimes and deal with the toll taken on their psyches and lives by delving into such dark matters. Too often a writer gets so into the goriness of the crimes that the reader can forget whose side they are supposed to be on. Ms. Osborne never makes that mistake. While the crimes in this book are imaginative, they aren't described as graphically as I feared they migh [...]

I was lucky to win this book from . The story starts off moving and keeps on going. There are murders and they remind you of the Grimme Brothers fairy tales. Along the way there is a twist which I won't talk about don't want to ruin the surprise. I really enjoyed this fast paced book. Once I started I couldn't put it down. A must read! Great story! Looking forward to read more books by this author.

    27. The Ardent Bibliophile

Wow, wow, wow The author had to make some difficult decisions when writing this one that's all I can say. ;) Great story line, interesting way of introducing the characters and building up to a climax. There are some heart-wrenching parts and some parts that make you gasp in surprise and others that pull the chain for the "aha!" light bulb we all have floating in our brains. Though book 1 in a series, it didn't leave too many things unresolved, and I appreciate that.
