When I first started this book of short stories I was immediately interested in how J. Schlenker draws such amazing pictures with her words, then I was taken by the actual drawing that accompanied the stories. Each story was rich in detail and there were some delightful images to go along. Frogs, mermaids, beets, all vivid and colorful and unique in their beauty. The stories were thick with life, The Missing Butler was a story that showed me how much we can misconstrue if we are not careful and [...]

This short story collection has a total of fifteen stories with illustrations by the author. Most of the stories fall under the category of humor as do the whimsical illustrations. The Missing Butler It is Inspector Brown’s first day as chief inspector when a portly woman storms into his office with a pan of brownies proclaiming a butler fellow robs her blind, and then she drops dead. The Mermaids A middle-aged woman finds solace in her new above ground pool. Within its confines she discovers sh [...]

'The Missing Butler and Other Life Mysteries' by J. Schlenker is an eclectic collection of light-hearted, generally humorous short stories that each deliver something for the reader to muse on. Whether this is a moral or just an entertaining idea varies from one story to the next. While some are more thought-provoking than others, each story is well-written in Schlenker's conversational, easy-going style. This was a good collection to pick up and put down throughout the busy Christmas-New Year h [...]

SHORT STORIES TO ENJOYA book of 15 short stories, all very different and some I enjoyed more than others. The range of different topics, from detective stories, to avoiding jury duty to coping with difficult relatives and a tale told from the perspective of a cat. There is something for everyone in this book. I particularly liked the illustrations for each, I guess drawn by the author herself.

Delightful, charming, poignant, different, wickedly funny; each story is unique and perfect. Take a break and sample one here and there, or plunge in for a few hours' entertainment. I discovered this volume through the recent MTW (Mystery Thrillers Week) which was a spectacular beginning to what is promised as an annual event, and am feeling very smug about my selections among the more than 250 authors' offerings. So here are my recommendations: 1) READ THIS BOOK (you will thank yourself); and 2 [...]

Humor is often wasted on me but I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Interesting perspectives and characters but most of all it is relatable. From things like running into a very old boyfriend and suddenly wishing you had stuck to that diet to shed the few extra pounds to crazy family outings. The author's own artwork that accompanies each of the short stories is an extra treat and beautifully done. A little gem of a book. Would make a great gift to your women friends especially.

Whimsical and Well WrittenI don’t often read books like this, but I got a kick out of the various stories. The author definitely has a way with words. The book has many illustrations that are quite well done. I found myself in some of the authors Life Mysteries. I think any reader will. I wholeheartedly recommend this book!

These life mysteries are awesome! Each of these stories is a slice of life with the little mysteries that we encounter. The absurd, the comical, and the mysterious aspects of life are presented. Some of these stories are sad enough to bring you to tears. Others are serious enough to cause one to ponder the serious aspects of life. And some will make you laugh.“The Missing Butler” – The very first sentence of this story—”It was that butler fellow that did it.”—also happened to be th [...]
