A peculiar book about a rich lady named Bibi Branchwater who wants two of everything. She was friendless until she bought a jewelry box with two sad-faced ballerinas. But with nurturing, love and care, she is eventually makes a sad situation a happy one.

This was a library pick this week. I loved, loved, loved the weirdly wonderful illustrations. The story, however, was just weird without being wonderful. Actual rating: 5 stars for the illustrations

My son brought this book home from the library at school. I loved it so much I bought it. I read it all the time. I love the story and the art in it.

Summary: This book is about a woman who is very wealthy and is very fond of the number two. She always wears things in twos like one hat on top of another. She also buys things in twos. She goes to the shop and becomes fascinated with a jewel box with twin ballerinas inside. The shop owner tells a tale of the sorcerer who made this box for his twins, who were not impressed.

I thought this story was original and cute. Two Christmas trees? That's hilarious. It was fun and since the intended audience is for kids, I think they'd like it!

A very rich woman buys a jewelery box with twin ballerinas inside. The ballerinas won't smile, and so the rich lady does everything in her power to make them smile. She takes them on a trip to Africa, and while there accidentally loses them. She cries out that she would give up everything she has to get them back. The ballerinas are found and turn into real little girls. The illustrations are a bit dark and very realistic, so best to use with older kids.

This was a haunting story. I really liked the characterization and the illustrations, although the plot seemed a bit random. My 3 year old picked this out because of the ballerinas on the cover, but I don't think she expected such an edgy story. Still, we both liked it, and the ending was gratefully not a sad one.

A rich woman likes two of everything, but doesn't have even one friend. She goes on a world adventure with her little jewel box ballerinas to find something worthwhile. The illustrations were okay (not my favorite), but they fit very nicely with the silly tone of the book. My 3 year old had to read it over and over, she loves it.

Even though this is a long one to read aloud, the kiddos still sat pretty rapt in attention. Story of a materialistic woman obsessed with the multiple of 2, who has her icy manner slowly melted by sad-eyed twin ballerinas figures. Did I mention there were ballerinas?

The story of a woman who could buy everything she wanted except friends and she learns that you cannot buy friendship when she has to search for her two twin ballerinas.

My girls loved this book. They actually gasped out loud at the climax of the story. It's a sweet, quirky story with a nice message, and lovely illustrations.

Another beautiful picture book, this one about the importance of friendship over possessions. Reminds me of a traditional Russian folktale.
